The Department
The department was started in 1971 initially
as a Natural Science Department with staff members of both Zoology and
Botany handling classes for the pre-university students. The
undergraduate course in Zoology was started during the academic year
1972-73 with Botany and Chemistry as allied subjects. Subsequently the
Department of zoology was upgraded by the University of Madras into a
full fledged research department in 1988 in recognition of the research
potential of the faculty of the department.
