The Department
It was in mid-1970s, when the University of
Madras introduced Defence Studies; Guru Nanak College was the first
college in the city to lend support to the University and offered the
course at the B.A. level in 1978-79. Till today this is still
spectacular for its singularity. Being popular with student mass, the
course became co-educational in 1994-95. The average pass percentage of
the Department in the university examinations over the last decade is
above 85 % and it bags 3 to 4 University ranks every year. Admissions
are given to students from poor and lower strata of the society, who
constitute more than 50 % of the student strength and become first
generation graduates.
Currently the Department is also engaged in
research activities. All member of the staff attend seminar and
conferences, present and publish research papers.
